Health tips we wish we could tell our younger selves
The saying “with age comes wisdom” is popular for a reason – it’s true. There are many things we learn only as we go through life, and some of these pertain to our health. When we’re young, it’s easy to take our health for granted. After all, we’re in our prime years and oftentimes, we feel invincible. As we age, however, we realize that isn’t the case. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy that we wish we could tell our younger selves.
1. Get enough sleep
You may not feel like you need as much sleep when you’re young but getting enough shut-eye is important for your overall health. Sure, it seems like a fun idea to stay out all night partying with friends, but this will take a serious toll on your body. Or perhaps you’ve gotten into the habit of staying up late watching shows on Netflix or even catching up on schoolwork. Set a timer for yourself to mark your end of day and make sure to get at least eight hours of sleep every night.
2. Eat healthy
A balanced diet is key to maintaining good health. Fill up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods and sugary drinks. Think of eating the rainbow: include a fruit or vegetable that corresponds to a color in the rainbow every day.
3. Be active
Exercise is important for keeping your body strong and healthy. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
4. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking
Another health advice tip we wish we could tell our younger self is that smoking and drinking can damage your health in many ways. Yes, even secondhand smoke. These include lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, and stroke, to name a very few. So, throw out your pack of cigarettes and put down that bottle of tequila. Your body will thank you for it!
5. Manage stress
Stress can take a toll on your health if you let it get out of control. Take steps to manage your stress levels and create a healthy balance in your life. Set boundaries in all aspects: work, school, family, and relationships.
6. Visit the doctor
Don’t wait until you’re sick to see the doctor. Schedule regular checkups and preventive screenings so you can stay on top of your health.
7. Invest in health insurance
